Introduction
Many older people in the UK live with health problems that make everyday life harder.
What many do not realise is that Attendance Allowance is there to help — and a lot of people miss out simply because they think they won’t qualify.
If you have reached State Pension age and your health affects daily life, even a little, this support may be worth checking in 2026.
What is Attendance Allowance?
Attendance Allowance is extra financial support for older people who need help because of illness or disability.
You may be eligible if:
- You are State Pension age or over
- You need help or supervision to manage day-to-day activities
You do not need to have a carer.
You do not need to be receiving other benefits.
How Much Can You Get in 2026?

Expected rates from April 2026
- £76.70 a week
If you need help during the day OR night - £114.60 a week
If you need help during the day AND night
Payments are usually made every four weeks.
(These rates are based on government proposals and will be confirmed in April 2026.)
What Kind of Help Counts?
You do not have to be seriously ill to qualify.
Help can include things like:
- Washing, dressing, or using the toilet
- Preparing meals or eating safely
- Remembering medication
- Someone needing to keep an eye on you to stay safe
If your condition affects your routine, that matters.
Your Income and Savings Do Not Matter

This is one of the most misunderstood parts.
Attendance Allowance is not means-tested.
That means:
- Your pension income does not affect your claim
- Your savings do not affect your claim
- Owning your home does not stop you claiming
Many people assume they are not eligible when they actually are.
Why Many People Do Not Claim
We often hear:
- “I manage most days”
- “I don’t want to take help from others”
- “I thought it was only for severe cases”
But Attendance Allowance is about how your health affects daily life, not how brave or independent you are.

Final Thought
Attendance Allowance exists to support older people whose health makes life more difficult.
If that sounds like you, even a little, it may be worth looking into in 2026.
Important: Attendance Allowance is not based on your income or savings.
If your health affects daily life, you may be eligible.
